He also has a long background as an artist. Sales of art work and cartoons helped fund his college education. He has also served as staff artist on a number of small circulation magazines and newsletters. He has provided instruction in a number of artistic styles, including cartooning, Celtic knotwork, medieval calligraphy and illumination, Anglo-Saxon art, pre-medieval Swedish art, artistic sheet metal work, and computer art.
His hobbies include astronomy, telescope-making, the making of Irish lace, preservation of early microcomputer systems, target shooting, and hobby development of computer games.
